Jerry West: The Man Behind the NBA Logo

A Look at the History and Inspiration of the Iconic Symbol

The Inspiration Behind the Logo

We've all seen the photos that have been shared countless times on social media—they're just perfect. The NBA logos before Jerry West were all simple designs that simply spelled out the phrase "National Basketball Association" or "NBA." In 1969, the NBA commissioned a new logo for the league from designer Alan Siegel, who had famously overseen the design of Major League Baseball's logo. Unofficially, however, the logo is well known to be the silhouette of one of the league's first true icons, Jerry West, who died Wednesday at age 86.

Jerry West was a 14-time All-Star for the Los Angeles Lakers and was widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. His silhouette is captured in a moment of flight, dribbling the ball with his left hand and his right arm extended. The logo has become one of the most recognizable symbols in sports and has been used by the NBA for over 50 years.
