Birth and Accession

Louis XIV, also known as Louis the Great or the Sun King, was born on September 5, 1638, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. He became King of France at the age of four upon the death of his father, Louis XIII.

Reign

Louis XIV's reign, which lasted from September 1, 1643, to September 1, 1715, was marked by absolute monarchy and territorial expansion. He strengthened the power of the French monarchy, centralizing control and establishing himself as the sole source of authority. Under his rule, France became a major European power, engaging in numerous wars and conquests.

Palace of Versailles

One of Louis XIV's most famous achievements was the construction of the magnificent Palace of Versailles.
