Mets Run Aaron Nola Off The Mound In The Fifth As Phillies Drop Series Opener To Nl East Rival

Mets Pound Phillies in Series Opener

Nola Falters Early, Mets Take Command

Mets Chase Nola in Fifth, Secure Victory

The New York Mets kicked off their series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a resounding 7-2 victory on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies' ace, Aaron Nola, struggled mightily, surrendering five runs on seven hits over just 4 1/3 innings.

The Mets offense wasted no time getting to Nola, scoring three runs in the first inning off a Brandon Nimmo single, a Starling Marte double, and a Francisco Lindor sacrifice fly. The Phillies managed to cut the lead to 3-2 in the second inning on a Kyle Schwarber home run, but the Mets would extend their lead in the fifth.

With one out and runners on first and second, Mark Canha drove in a run with a single off reliever Jose Alvarado. Eduardo Escobar followed with a two-run double, giving the Mets a 6-2 lead and effectively chasing Nola from the game.

The Mets' bullpen held the Phillies scoreless for the remainder of the game, allowing only two hits over the final 4 2/3 innings. Chasen Shreve, Adam Ottavino, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Diaz combined to strike out seven batters and walk none.

With the win, the Mets improve to 31-25 on the season, while the Phillies drop to 32-25. The two teams will square off again on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, with Taijuan Walker scheduled to start for the Mets and Ranger Suarez taking the mound for the Phillies.
